SERP Weak Spots After the Helpful Content Update
Weak spots are the results a newer site can realistically displace. The definition changed after 2023, and forums are the reason.

What Is a SERP Weak Spot?
A SERP weak spot is a result on Google's first page that looks beatable: a low-authority site, a page that does not really target the query, or thin and outdated content. When several appear on one results page, it suggests Google lacks a strong answer for that search.
Types of Weak Spots
| Weak Spot | What It Looks Like | Still Reliable? |
|---|---|---|
| Low-authority site | A small site with low Domain Authority ranking in the top 10 | Usually, if its page is not an exact, strong match |
| Off-target page | A page ranking for a query its title and content do not address | Yes |
| Thin or outdated page | Short, old or incomplete answers | Yes |
| Forum or Q&A thread | Reddit, Quora or niche forums | Not automatically since 2023 |
Why Forums Stopped Being Easy Targets
For years, a forum thread on page one was a classic sign of an easy keyword: if Google was showing a discussion, a dedicated article should be able to beat it. Since Google's September 2023 Helpful Content Update, forum and user-generated content has gained visibility in many results pages. Google appears to value first-hand discussion for many queries.
Keyword tools adjusted. LowFruits, for example, no longer treats forums and other user-generated content as automatic weak spots, and its own tutorial notes that sites such as Reddit and Quora have become strong. You can still enable forums as weak spots in its settings if your niche shows otherwise.
How to Judge a Forum Result Today
- Is the thread on-topic? A loosely related thread is still an opening; a thread asking exactly the query is harder to beat.
- Is it a large platform or a small forum? A small niche forum is generally weaker than a major platform.
- Does it answer the question? Threads with unanswered or conflicting replies leave room for a clear, complete page.
- How many forums rank? Several discussion results can signal that Google wants opinions, which a standard article may not satisfy.
How Much Does Authority Matter?
Domain-level metrics such as Moz Domain Authority and Ahrefs Domain Rating estimate a whole site's link strength. They do not measure the specific page. A strong site can rank an unlinked page; a weak site can rank because its page matches intent perfectly. Use authority to shortlist, then read the page. See keyword difficulty and domain metrics for more.
A Quick Weak-Spot Checklist
- At least two low-authority sites in the top 10.
- At least one ranking page that does not target the query in its title.
- Results that are thin, dated or incomplete.
- Forum results judged individually, not counted as weak by default.
- A query your site can answer better and more specifically.
Finding Weak Spots at Scale
Bulk SERP tools speed this up. LowFruits extracts the top 10 for each keyword, flags sites under a Domain Authority threshold (20 by default) and gives each keyword a 1–3 SERP Difficulty score. Its documentation suggests targeting keywords with at least two weak spots and a score of 1. See how to use LowFruits or the full LowFruits review.

Can You Still Outrank Reddit?
Sometimes. If a thread is off-topic, unanswered or from a small forum, a focused page can outrank it. Exact-match threads on large platforms are much harder to beat than before 2023.
What Counts as a Weak Site?
Commonly, a site with low domain authority. LowFruits uses Moz Domain Authority under 20 by default, and you can change the threshold.
How Many Weak Spots Should a Keyword Have?
LowFruits suggests at least two weak spots and a SERP Difficulty score of 1 as a starting point. Always check the results page yourself.
