Why Keyword Difficulty Scores Mislead
A difficulty score is a summary of a results page. Here is what it captures, what it misses and how to check it.

What Is Keyword Difficulty?
Keyword difficulty (KD) is a score that estimates how hard it is to rank on page one for a search. Each tool calculates it differently. Ahrefs, for example, bases its 0–100 KD on how many referring domains link to the top-ranking pages. Other tools blend link and authority metrics in their own ways.
Why Difficulty Scores Mislead
- They measure links, not answers. A page that fits the intent poorly can still have many links, and a perfect match can have none.
- They miss site strength. A large brand can rank an unlinked page, producing a low score for a hard keyword.
- They are averages. One weak result at position three is invisible inside a single number.
- Tools disagree. The same keyword can score very differently across tools because each uses its own model.
Domain Authority vs Domain Rating
| Metric | Publisher | Scale | Measures |
|---|---|---|---|
| Domain Authority (DA) | Moz | 1–100 | Predicted ranking strength of a whole domain, based on links |
| Domain Rating (DR) | Ahrefs | 0–100 | Strength of a domain's backlink profile |
| Authority Score | Semrush | 0–100 | Overall domain quality, including links |
These metrics track each other closely. A 2023 study in Profesional de la información comparing Moz DA, Semrush Authority Score and Ahrefs DR across 3,151 domains found pairwise correlations above 0.9. All three are third-party estimates; Google does not use them.
What to Check Instead
- Who ranks: are there low-authority sites in the top 10?
- Title match: do ranking pages target the exact query?
- Content fit: do they fully answer it, and are they current?
- Result types: forums, videos and shopping results each change what is needed.
This is the idea behind SERP weak spots. Tools such as LowFruits apply it in bulk, replacing the 0–100 score with a 1–3 SERP Difficulty built from the weak sites and title matches on each page.

Use KD to sort a large list and discard obvious giants. Then check the remaining results pages, or use a SERP analysis tool. If you are comparing tools, see LowFruits vs Ahrefs and LowFruits vs KWFinder.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is Keyword Difficulty Accurate?
It is a useful rough filter but often misleading for individual keywords, because it summarizes links rather than how well pages answer the query.
What Is a Good Keyword Difficulty for a New Site?
There is no universal number because each tool's scale differs. Check the results page for low-authority sites and poorly matched pages instead.
Is Domain Authority a Google Ranking Factor?
No. Domain Authority, Domain Rating and Authority Score are third-party estimates from Moz, Ahrefs and Semrush.
